Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep.-elect Francisco Matugas will prioritize measures aimed at ensuring the welfare of both local and foreign tourists visiting Siargao Island.

Matugas will take over his son, Francisco Jose Matugas II, who lost in the gubernatorial race during the May 12 elections.

In an interview on Monday, Matugas said he would work closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to improve facilities at Siargao’s Sayak Airport in Del Carmen town. He said he had already discussed these plans with DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, who recently visited Siargao.

“Sayak Airport currently handles 18 to 19 flights per day. We are proposing the construction of a modular-type passenger terminal that could cater to around 500 to 700 passengers, significantly improving capacity and passenger experience,” Matugas said.

He also noted that many foreign visitors particularly enjoy motorcycle riding along Siargao’s circumferential road, which provides access to tourist destinations beyond General Luna, the island’s renowned surfing site.

“We will work to allocate funding for the installation of solar lights along the circumferential road to enhance the safety of our visitors who enjoy motorcycle rides even at night,” Matugas said.

Data from the Department of Tourism-Caraga Region on Monday indicated a 9.8 percent increase in tourist arrivals on the island from January to March 2025, compared to the same period last year, with figures rising from 102,439 to 112,510.

Domestic visits to Siargao in the first three months of this year rose to 77,202 from 72,251 in 2024, while foreign tourist arrivals also increased to 35,308 from 30,188 last year. (PNA)
